[but the biggest threat she had to deal with, she let her guard down at a crucial moment.
she shrugs] Hand-to-hand combat combined with phasing. We didn't get much of a learning curve, the UP had more members drafted in and sent us out on missions really fast.
[the Legion was a huge publicity coup for the UP, a chance to show people of different worlds working in cooperation]
There were twelve of us total, all from different worlds with different powers. When we first started, all of us went on missions, but as the group grew, our leader started being a lot more selective as to who went where. I was always picked to go because of my phasing and my experience. I was also part of the Legion Espionage Squad.
[ Interesting. And a way bigger deal than the Guard, but he's still wary, and going to just be honest about it. She seems mature enough not to lash out, and if he's wrong that's just a red flag in and of itself. ]
You sound like an obvious in and I bet you'll be incredibly helpful. But being a badass in a fight isn't everything, and I remember being your age. You seem smarter than I was for sure but you join up, we're sending you out to potentially get hurt and that's a way tougher thing with a teenager. I'm pretty sure Nick feels the same way since he's letting this be my call instead of just sending you for training.
How about you show me what you've got, and we test out a few weapons to see what you'd like to work with? Then we start you off paired with another Guardsman for patrols. It's all hands on deck on arrivals day, and if this works you can get your own shifts soon.
[she can be a hothead, but she knows to keep her cool in this situation. she's still nervous, though, and she knows better than to bring up the fact that by UP standards, she's an adult. that doesn't seem to be going over very well here.
she nods] That sounds fair. I know I'm young, but I'm glad I'm being given the chance to prove myself.
I'd be glad to. Which weapons do you have do you have to offer? I assume there are no such things as laser rifles here. Who would I be paired with on patrols, yourself or whomever's on duty at the time? [she smiles] I look forward to it.
[ Awesome. He's feeling pretty optimistic here, she seems like a good kid. ]
You're in, then. Welcome to the Guard, Tinya, we're lucky to have you.
[ He pushes up off the couch, gesturing for her to follow him to the training area. ]
We've got a stash here and there's way more variety in the armory... no guns at all, though, anybody who has one probably brought it from home and we have to deal for ammo. The only long range option in Hadriel is a bow, and I'm not great with one yet so if you were interested I'd probably tap somebody else. Medium range, there are spears and certain sizes of axe. Up close stuff is lots of blades. See if anything jumps at you.
[ As for who to pair her with... hmm. ]
I'll take you, sure, but I bet plenty of others would be up for company and sparring too. It's a good crew, we're just shorthanded right now and there's more ground to cover on this planet. You'll be a real asset, especially being able to fly if we need fast backup somewhere.
...can you take passengers?
[ This is clearly a 100% PROFESSIONAL INQUIRY. He doesn't also just want to fly for fun, noooooo... ]
[she is. her mother had a hard time dealing with Tinya's willfulness, but if it's harnessed properly it's actually a strength
she smiles a little wider] Thank you very much, Drake. I'm glad to be had.
[she gets up from the couch and follows him]
It probably wouldn't hurt to learn the bow. Who should I go to for that? [she goes over the the rack of blades and makes her way down the line slowly, coming to a stop when she sees a particular sword. she takes it from the rack and unsheathes it, taking in the curve and color of the blade, the pattern on the hilt. black and white. her favorites] This one. I think I'll take this one.
[she'll go with anyone?]
That sounds fine. I'm used to working with a variety of people and a lot of different powers. How many members of the Guard are there? [she smiles again] Thank you for saying so.
I can. Usually, either I carry them or they ride on my back.
[ Drake stands back while Tinya considers weapons, letting her ask her questions. They're all simple enough, really. ]
Definitely one of the elves for a bow, that'd be Curufin or Fingon. And you'll make 13, of the regulars. We've lost a lot of good people the last few months...
[ Some of whom have been personal blows to him, but there's only a flicker of that in his expression. Moving on, business... business.......... he gives a nod of approval at her chosen weapon. Henry taught him the broadsword but he's a big guy and a katana's lighter and faster. He's not 100% on how the techniques differ, but it's still a two handed sword. They'll manage fine, he thinks, and makes another little gesture for Tinya to hit the mat with him. ]
You said you were good at hand to hand, and I want to see how many hits you land vs take with the phasing.
[ Flying, though, it's hard not to comment again on that. ]
I. . . think I've met Curufin? The name is familiar, anyway. And lucky number thirteen.
[she does notice the flicker. she's not an ambassador's daughter and assistant for nothing. but she chooses not to say anything because it's not like she doesn't have her own trauma that she'd like to keep buried down deep inside as long as possible. and she's never used a weapon before. the Legion believed in incapacitating opponents only while with a weapon comes the greater probability of killing. she's going to have to grow accustomed to the notion, though. when Drake gestures, she goes onto the mat]
All right, that's fair to ask.
[flying is a hard thing to overlook]
Hmm. I'd say. . . 250 kilograms? They'd need to be on my back, though.
[ Sorry, Tinya, killing the monsters isn't up for debate. They're not intelligent creatures, they can't be reasoned with or imprisoned, they come in swarms and will keep attacking until they're put down. Drake had never killed anything before Hadriel, either, but it's really not optional to survival. You adapt. ]
Everybody gets sized up, it's not just you. So we know who's best at what and can strategize for things.
[ He drops into a fighting stance, not planning to hold back. ]
...I don't think anybody here's even half that, cool. Putting a pin in it.
[she's already resigning herself to the likelihood of killing, but there's no way she's going to mention that when she gets home. the other Legionnaires, unless they came here too, wouldn't understand]
I didn't figure it was just me. You need to know what everyone's capable of.

That'll make rescues easier.
