So there was no reason for you to assume that anything you shared was going to freak him out. It's an upsetting subject, yeah, but you both went into it with the understanding of what might come up. You wouldn't drop this kind of shit at random, or on somebody who you knew it would upset. You're better at reading people than you think you are.

I don't know what made him send this, but it reflects more on him than you, I think. Takes a certain kind of person to put together something like this for someone they don't really know... maybe he wasn't freaked at all, just empathetic and wanted to help 'cuz he's been there?
